Maple Rise offers a mixed residential scheme in the heart of Cork, Ireland. Knitted throughout the fabric of the scheme, a ‘designed wild’ is carefully considered alongside the distinct character zones for the street-facing and courtyard-facing units (housing and apartments). Serving as a demonstration of how nature can become an active rather than passively held idea, biodiversity and recreation (re)define a sustainable relationship between people, nature and living — facilitating an enhanced biosphere. Through a series of safe public access to these habitats via pedestrian pathways, universal design boundary treatments and porous paving surfaces — access is increased, safety is enhanced through passive surveillance, and boundary treatments become interconnected, echoing the sensibilities of the biodiversity itself.
